Discovering Queenstown: Spring and the shoulder season

Spring is a simply delightful time to visit, stay, vacation or holiday in Queenstown!  As we keep discovering the best things about Queenstown, lets have a look at what we like the most!

Discovering Queenstown: Spring and the shoulder season

Lets jump right in to why we think Queenstown, NZ is such a special place during the Spring...

Dates

Spring in Queenstown normally comes in September and transitions into summer in early December.   It's literally three months of cool days and crisp blue skies.  it also a time of fewer tourists and longer days.  While we love spring, we love autumn too so stay tuned for our next post on Autumn!  For now though, lets focus on all the cool things you can discover in Queenstown during Spring and the shoulder season.

The Weather

According to MetService, Queenstown enjoys the following average highs and lows during spring:  September13° / 2°, October16° / 4°, November 18° / 6°.  But what does this mean?  With regards to what to pack, it means layers.  Make sure you travel with suitable layers and a decent outer coat and a water proof jacket.  For the ladies, semi sensible shoes!  Queenstown might be a ski destination, but heels are not necessary!  In a nut shell you can expect cool evening and generally sunny days with the occasional spring rain shower!

A Photographers Paradise

Whats not to love about discovering Queenstown as the sun takes on a warmer light, the pastures and valley explode with deep colours and the basin is surrounded by snow capped peaks?  Spring is simply delicious at this time of year and made for photography!  The lake is generally calm, and even if the weather doesn't play nice, the moody amphitheater that is Queenstown always has an amazing photographic vantage point.

New Life & New Growth

We mentioned the greener grass, the vibrant spring flowers, the bluer sky, the sparkling Wakatipu and the crisp snow capped mountains..... but add too that is the lambing season in Queenstown.  Nothing quite says spring like the emergence of new farm life!  If you were to drive between Queenstown central and Arrowtown, especially along Malaghans road, you'd find paddocks of new born lambs, all fluffy and white, bouncing around the fields!  its a real treat to see and experience!  For fresh fauna with the backdrop of Queenstown central, or out towards Walter Pea and Cecil Peaks, try the Queenstown Gardens as they bloom with a vibrant collection of daffodils, tulips and cherry blossoms!

Less Busy

Spring is officially the shoulder season, but we have to admit, that it's becoming more popular to visit Queenstown during this time, every year! But in terms of visiting us at Spinnaker Bay Apartments, we have tended to be less busy during Spring and Autumn.  It means that if you're considering a holiday, vacation or stay in Queenstown, then the months of September, October and November are a great time to come.
