Waitangi Weekend in Queenstown 2022
Queenstown is the perfect place to spend your Waitangi weekend this year!
The town is full of history and culture, and there are plenty of things to do and see. More importantly, we have availability in our apartments so grab your friends, your family or maybe both, and book a long weekend with us in one of our superbly located apartments!
For our non-NZ friends and customers, Waitangi weekend is a traditional long weekend in which we officially recognise and celebrate The Treaty of Waitangi - Te Tiriti o Waitangi - our founding document. Signed on February 6, 1840 in the Bay of Islands, by 40 representatives of the British Crown and over 530 Māori chiefs from New Zealand (predominantly of the North Island), it is considered to be one of the world's most significant treaties. The Treaty gave Māori the rights of British subjects and guaranteed continued Māori ownership and chieftainship of land, forests, and fisheries. In return, Māori agreed to cede sovereignty to the British Crown. The Treaty has, however, been the source of much conflict and debate over the years, with its intent, role, purpose, and meaning ebbing and flowing over the last 182 years, which has seen land wars, legal wars and more recently, The Treaty of Waitangi Act which created the Waitangi Tribunal, a commission that investigates breaches of the treaty by the Crown or its agents and suggests ways of redress.
As the last long weekend until Easter, it's a fantastic opportunity to head south and relax on the shorelines of Lake Wakatipu, go mountain biking or hiking, take a vineyard tour or just get away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Here you'll find an up to date event guide which includes Margo's Bottomless Brunch on Saturday and of course, our normal arts and crafts markets over the weekend.
Our apartments are ready for you, adhere to the strictest Covid safety procedures, cleaning and sanitizing, are comfortable and really will feel like that home away from home!
