LUMA Southern Light Project 2019

See Your World In A Completely Different Light.

LUMA’S Southern Light Project is a ‘not to missed’ night time family friendly sensory experience in Queenstown Gardens this Queens Birthday weekend, with four nights of illuminated art, light sculptures and performances.  It’s a free interactive public event that focuses on transforming space with clever light installations and art.

Using Queenstown’s iconic backdrop as its canvas, local, national and international artists will showcase a range of visually spectacular light sculptures and displays – painting with light to create a magical world of reflections and illuminations.  Unique to the natural amphitheatre that is Queenstown, with towering pines and a crystal clear lake embraced by soaring alpine mountains, the whole family can further enjoy live music, performance, outdoor movies and the LUMA Lounge hosted by The World Bar.

Come early and stay for dinner!  Families will be able to enjoy hot chocolates or mulled wine and warm food from a number of local food stalls.  There are even ‘warm’ zones where you can relax and heat up before continuing on your light quest!

The growth of LUMA since its pilot on 2015 is a spectacular testament to its popularity and creativity, blending art, education and interactive family fun into a single event.  In 2016 LUMA attracted an impressive 10,000 visitors which saw a breathtaking increase to 50,000+ visitors last year.

Remember:

  • Dress Warm. It is recommended by LUMA that you bring layers as early June is known for its unpredictable weather patterns that could include snow: hats/beanies, scarfs, gloves, boots, warm socks, puffer jackets, and layers of merino and/or polypropylene.  ‘Feedback from previous LUMA attendees, especially those with small children, suggest that you will be able to really appreciate the environment if you are toasty!’
  • And don’t for get your camera’s – this is one event that you’ll want to capture on film and share with your friends and family!
  • Furry Friends – LUMA ask that you leave your pets at home, as children may become distressed in the presence of dogs, especially after dark and with moving lights and interactive artwork.
  • Lastly – get a photo with one of the fairies – they are a highlight of the event!
