Packing for Autumn in Queenstown

Autumn in Queenstown is characterised by beautiful light, stunning foliage colours, and lowering temperatures as we make our way from balmy 26 degree days to sub-zero winter temperatures.  Many locals of Queenstown New Zeland would say Autumn is their favourite season - fewer tourists but more colours, less sweltering summer days and more time to breathe before the chills of winter settle upon them.

So, if you are coming to stay and play with us here at Spinnaker Bay Executive Apartments, during Autumn in Queenstown, then we highly suggest the following packing list that has been collected amongst our staff here at Spinnaker Bay Apartments - on average, temperatures average between 12 and 17 degrees Celsius during the day and 2 to 7 degrees overnight.  So with that in mind, we suggest the following:

Autumn in Queenstown New Zealand at Spinnaker Bay Executive Apartments

Overall:  Pack light but with lots of layers.

  • Light thermals for trekking or mountain excursions
  • Merino Wool socks and layers
  • Decent hiking shoes
  • Waterproof layers, that includes top and bottom - Windproof as well
  • Hayfever pills if you suffer allergies
  • Beanie, scarf and gloves
  • Light down jacket

In town

  • Light trousers for evenings
  • jeans and Cargos
  • closed-toe shoes for entry into bars in the evenings
  • Jacket (light down for the chilly evenings)
  • Hoodies/jumpers

It's not yet winter but the evenings can get quite chilly and should a breeze blow in off Lake Wakatipu, you'll need the leg coverage and lite jacket as well.  Remember that the alpine environment tends towards unpredictability - the weather can change on a dime and we wouldn't want you to stop enjoying the amazing scenery that Queenstown has to offer!
