About the Traffic Light Framework
The COVID-19 Traffic Light Framework is a four-level alert system developed by the New Zealand government to guide the country's response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The alert system provides a framework for decision-making. It sets out the measures that need to be taken at each level to prevent an outbreak and keep our nation safe.
The four levels of the COVID-19 Traffic Light Framework are as follows:
- Level 1 (Prepare) - This level indicates that COVID-19 is contained in New Zealand. People can go about their daily lives, but they must be vigilant and follow basic hygiene practices such as washing hands and staying home if they feel unwell.
- Level 2 (Reduce) - This level indicates a risk of community transmission, but the spread is still contained. Restrictions are implemented to reduce the risk of transmission, such as limiting the size of gatherings and maintaining physical distancing.
- Level 3 (Restrict) - This level indicates a high risk of community transmission. Additional restrictions are placed to limit contact between people. This may include closing schools and non-essential businesses; people are advised to stay home.
- Level 4 (Lockdown) - This is the highest level of the COVID-19 Traffic Light Framework and indicates a widespread outbreak of COVID-19. People must stay home, and all non-essential businesses and services are closed.
The New Zealand government regularly reviews the alert levels based on the latest information about the spread of COVID-19 in the country. The government provides guidance and support for businesses and individuals affected by the alert levels. By following the COVID-19 Traffic Light Framework, New Zealand has successfully controlled the spread of COVID-19 and kept its citizens safe.
